Kundalini Yoga at Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice is the traditional gathering time for Kundalini Yoga teachers and practitioners.
My first Summer Solstice was in 1977, a year after I had moved into the New Haven, CT ashram. This was the first year we all gathered on the land known as Ram Das Puri. We set up our tents out past the parking lot, and hiked about a quarter mile to the showers and then a bit further to the Tantric Shelter. As the years passed, the camping tents moved closer and the Tantric Shelter grew larger.
An amazing discipline was born, the discipline of the Yogi. Sadhana practice begins at 3:00 AM with a musical wake-up call. Cold showers are followed by prayers and Kundalini Yoga. The day continues with more classes, more yoga, White Tantric Yoga, and music…lots of beautiful music in a serene, sacred landscape.
A cleansing diet is served. The main fare is protein-rich mung beans and rice, lettuce, hot sauce and Yogi Tea. This brings the body into a mildly alkaline state, a great balance for meditation.
If you intend to immerse yourself in this life changing experience, here are a few tips:
  • This is a drug and alcohol free environment
  • Everything is strictly vegetarian
  • Vitamin B15 will help you to oxygenate at altitude, the site in the Jemez Mountains is over 7,000 feet.
  • Bring organic skin and bug protection
  • Drink at least 80 ounces of water a day
  • Bring an attitude of gratitude and you can’t miss!

Spring Laya Yoga Time Increase

First, let me wish you a HAPPY SPRING!

The weather just needs to catch up. We had a foot of snow recently and another inch last night. In fact, it is snowing right now.
Our area is famous for late snows. A few years back, it snowed on Memorial Day and a week later we got another 15 inches. 3 weeks later, we went into Summer. Spring lasted 3 weeks. Los Angeles is only 2 hours and 6700 ft away!

But, in the interest of the Laya Yoga meditation, we increased our time from 45 to 62 minutes on the Equinox. That one took about 3 days to integrate. Falling asleep can be really easy after a full hour. It was a bit of a blow-out on those days. Pumping the navel and pulling the diaphragm in and up can move a lot of energy. Sweat comes with it. Dripping sweat. Let’s cleanse!

We’re both losing weight. LOOKING GOOD!

I recommend you try something like this. So many meditations are, well, meditative. Try one of the “heavies”. Tantric Har, for example. Get that navel pumping and stimulate your system.
One class, the Siri Singh Sahib put the right hand palm down in front of the heart center. Elbow up, parallel to the floor. His comment was that the yogis use the Hamsa Danda (T-Stick) for this. Since we didn’t have one, we just put the arm into the correct position and held it. Whew!

PLEASE, give yourself time afterward to integrate. Sit and meditate in the silence for a few minutes. Lie down on your spine for 11-16 minutes. If time is an issue, set an alarm so you don’t wake 2 hours later. It happens.

Wishing you all a great Spring sadhana. You could set a goal of Summer Solstice and see where you are in 40 to 90 days. Waho!

Blessings.

Kriya for Health and Vitality

Sodarshan Chakra Kriya

The meditation we’re suggesting today is an advanced one, not for beginners. This meditation works with the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is the master gland controlling the other glands. Mastering this meditation will increase intuition and the pranic powers. Start at 31 minutes a day and expand to 62  minutes.

Straighten the spine and focus the eyes at the tip of the nose. They eyes are 9/10 closed (very important detail). Place the left hand in gyan mudra (thumb and index finger together). The thumb and index finger of the right hand will be used to block the nostrils, one at a time.

Use the right thumb and block the right nostril. Slowly inhale through the left nostril. As you inhale you will repeat a mantra while pumping the navel point. Mentally repeat WHA HE GURU (Wha Hey Guroo) 16 times while pumping the navel on every sylable (total of 48 pumps per cycle.

Unblock the right nostril, block the left nostril and slowly exhale through the right nostril.

Repeat for 31 to 62 minutes. When finished, inhaled and hold for five to ten seconds.

The video below is from one of Yogi Bhajan’s classes. We were fortunate to be at this class when it was taught. In this variation, Sodarshan Chakra Kriya, Yogi Bhajan begins with the left nostril. He gives an incredible description of the mantra, ‘Wha He Guru’.

He says that Wha is a water sound. He -is the word for God and is a fire sound. Guru, is the sound of light. It shatters the limitlessness of human thought. Alchemically, we are mixing water, fire and light in this process, which he says creates Ether.

Meditation & Mantra

There is a science and technology to the practice of Kundalini Yoga.

Enjoy this video lecture by Yogi Bhajan. He talks about locking the optical nerve to achieve a focused mind. One can lock the eyes between the brow, at the tip of the nose or at the chin.

Aligning the Soul, body and mind through this method allows the subconscious mind to release negative thoughts. Mantra (sacred prayers) permeates and transforms negative thoughts.

Clearing your subconscious daily will allow your intuition to guide your intelligence. It will also eliminate your need to dream at night!

There are two ways to live life. You can magnetize yourself, all will come to you and the Universal Mind will serve you. Or, you can chase everything.

When our ego blocks our identity and our essence, there is not enough money and not enough time. A regular meditation practice allows us to cleanse our reactive mind and live in peace and clarity.

Life is a working challenge, clear and cleanse daily!

Mantra and Yoga

Early stories of the Ramayana show yogis and ascetics performing penances and kryas for thousands of years. As  astrology evolves and the ages turn, the level of difficulty increases. It becomes harder to practice disciplines.

This age or yuga is known as the Iron Age or Kali Yuga.  It’s the age of electronic interference and chemical poisoning. We have little control over our nervous impulses and desires. Beginning or strengthening a spiritual practice now, under these conditions, will yield tremendous rewards.

There are three stages in the development of a meditation practice.

  • The first stage is education, getting to know yourself. Meditation requires discipline and commitment. The body does not want to be still and the mind can rationalize its way out of anything. We favor using mantra with meditation to increase our vibration.
  • Phase two begins the control of the emotions. Our spiritual path names Lust, Anger, Greed, Pride and Attachment as obstacles to meditation. Sitting with a non-judgemental mind begins to release these obstacles.
  • Phase three turns meditation into a cleansing machine. This is the stage where you are able to release the emotions, it is the end of the reactive mind and the beginning of FREEDOM.

We prefer to add mantra to our meditation. This Kundalini Yoga style was taught to us by Yogi Bhajan.

Mantras are sacred phrases, repeated as a prayer. They are incorporated in meditation, repeated on rosary beads and and malas of many Faiths. Most spiritual traditions have the practice of repeating a prayer. The Christians use “Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me a sinner.” Hindus have numerous mantras for example, “Hare Rama Hari Krishna, Om Namo Narayani” etc.

Are you ready to begin a practice or kick up your current discipline?
Here are some of the top Kundalini Yoga Mantras:

1. Adi Shakti Mantra

Ek Ong Kar Sat Nam Siri Wahe Guru (Pronounced: ‘Sat’ sounds like ‘but’. ‘Wa – Hay – Goo – Roo’. The ‘R’ in Roo is spoken with the tongue tapping the roof of the mouth, almost a ‘D’ sound.)

There is one Creator who has created this creation, truth is *His name, great and indescribable is *His wisdom.

*This path does not see God as either man or woman. His, is used from the original translation from Gurmukhi.

This eight-fold seed mantra stimulates and balances the brain. Each sound vibrates a different chakra. “If you chant this mantra it will open the lock of ignorance and darkness.”

2. Guru Ram Das Mantra

Guru Guru Wahe Guru, Guru Ram Das Guru

My husband (Kirpal) had an interesting translation; The Servant of God brings the light of the Infinite to the Earth.

This video shows Snatam Kaur chanting this mantra.

3. Sat Nam

Sa Ta Na Ma

This seed mantra is used the most in the practice of Kundalini Yoga. It is the primal sounds of creation. It literally means Truth is God’s Name. According to the Sadhana Guideline Manual, “this mantra can be used to smooth out and balance mental energy.”

4. Mantra of Ecstasy

Wahe Guru

This mantra is our personal favorite. It was developed by Guru Gobind Singh of 18th Century India. He designed it to be especially effective in our current times. Wha is bliss, He -means Hari or God’s name, and the Guru is the one that carries you from darkness to light. This mantra produces happiness.

5. Saruba Shakti Mantra

Gobinday Mukanday Udaray Aparay, Haring Karing Nirnamay Akamay

This mantra eliminates karmic blocks and curses from the past. The Sadhana Manuual says that regular practice will cause all of the occult powers to serve you.

It was developed by Guru Gobind Singh. In thinking of past memories, any time Yogi Bhajan had us meditate with this mantra, I knew it was going to be a long, painful meditation, LOL!
