Kundalini Yoga at Summer Solstice

Kundalini Yoga

Summer Solstice is the traditional gathering time for Kundalini Yoga teachers and practitioners.
My first Summer Solstice was in 1977, a year after I had moved into the New Haven, CT ashram. This was the first year we all gathered on the land known as Ram Das Puri. We set up our tents out past the parking lot, and hiked about a quarter mile to the showers and then a bit further to the Tantric Shelter. As the years passed, the camping tents moved closer and the Tantric Shelter grew larger.
An amazing discipline was born, the discipline of the Yogi. Sadhana practice begins at 3:00 AM with a musical wake-up call. Cold showers are followed by prayers and Kundalini Yoga. The day continues with more classes, more yoga, White Tantric Yoga, and music…lots of beautiful music in a serene, sacred landscape.
A cleansing diet is served. The main fare is protein-rich mung beans and rice, lettuce, hot sauce and Yogi Tea. This brings the body into a mildly alkaline state, a great balance for meditation.
If you intend to immerse yourself in this life changing experience, here are a few tips:
  • This is a drug and alcohol free environment
  • Everything is strictly vegetarian
  • Vitamin B15 will help you to oxygenate at altitude, the site in the Jemez Mountains is over 7,000 feet.
  • Bring organic skin and bug protection
  • Drink at least 80 ounces of water a day
  • Bring an attitude of gratitude and you can’t miss!

Man Who’s Beard…

“Man who’s beard reaches his navel can never be insulted.”
- The Siri Singh Sahib

Photo is from the 1977 India Yatra, on the road to the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
This gentleman was kind enough to let me take his photograph.

May you be inspired to grow beyond his beard!

Blessings.

Stress? Who’s Got Stress?

This comes from the Summer that KWTC and just about everything else going on, were STRESSFUL.

That was the lovely time when the Siri Singh Sahib recommended the simplest thing: Rose Water!

“1 ounce of Rose Water in 6 ounces of Water first thing in the morning.
Takes your stress.
Gives you strength.”

Dang, if it didn’t work! I noticed a difference in 5 days. Do give it a try!

NOTE:
Be very careful of the Rose Water you use. It should only be distilled rose petals, not oil or extract or perfume. On initial search at Amazon, I only found 1 brand that is acceptable. On secondary search, there are many more. Shop carefully, you’re going to be drinking the stuff.

That Summer, just to amp it up (tone it down?), I put together my own blend for the essential cold wake-up shower. Being hot weather, that cold shower was sometimes BARELY enough to change the space.

Here’s my “formula” for a more stress free wake up. Your mileage may vary.

Get a bottle of good Sweet Almond Oil.

Get a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap.

Get a small bottle of Organic Peppermint Oil; NOT the extract or flavoring.

Get a bottle of Dr. Bach’s Rescue Remedy. You know those flower remedies. If not, time to learn!

Take the cap off the Almond Oil.
Add 4-6 drops, up to a 1/2 tsp (Yikes! You’re STRESSED!) of Peppermint Oil.
Add a half dropper of the Rescue Remedy.
Shake well.

Take the cap off the Peppermint Soap.
Add 4-6 drops of the Peppermint Oil…Seriously, that’s all you need! It IS Peppermint Soap, after all.
Add a half dropper of the Bach Rescue Remedy.
Shake well.

*Go easy on it. You can always add more later, if you don’t feel it is strong enough.*

Head to the shower.
Shake both bottles before using.
Oil up.
Take a COLD shower and scrub with that soap.

Feeling better?

Other than smelling REALLY FRESH, you may feel like the light got turned on inside. Kind of, walking around with a major glow. YES!

Stress? Please post a comment!

In Memoriam: Jose Arguelles

Jose Arguelles is known for quite a lot of accomplishments in his life. Wikipedia has more information.

He affected us with his announcement of the Harmonic Convergence in the 80′s. We’re still dealing with that one.

In class, the Siri Singh Sahib spoke briefly about the Harmonic Convergence and the Mayans:
They were “extremely accurate” in their work. When their work was finished, they looked at each other and disappeared.
I know he said more. This is what stuck in my head.

Now that the Mayan language has been translated, scientists are stunned at their astronomical accuracy while using “primitive” tools. We awaken slowly.

Jose published a book in 1987, “The Mayan Factor.” It is still a good read, if you don’t understand where all this 2012 “panic” is coming from. Don’t be put off by his correlations with the I Ching. We know a lot more now, than we did then.

It appears many teachers are leaving before the End Time. The ball is in our court! We need to take the Teachings and RUN!

Pardon. We need to take the Teachings and FLY!

Blessings.

Spring Laya Yoga Time Increase

First, let me wish you a HAPPY SPRING!

The weather just needs to catch up. We had a foot of snow recently and another inch last night. In fact, it is snowing right now.
Our area is famous for late snows. A few years back, it snowed on Memorial Day and a week later we got another 15 inches. 3 weeks later, we went into Summer. Spring lasted 3 weeks. Los Angeles is only 2 hours and 6700 ft away!

But, in the interest of the Laya Yoga meditation, we increased our time from 45 to 62 minutes on the Equinox. That one took about 3 days to integrate. Falling asleep can be really easy after a full hour. It was a bit of a blow-out on those days. Pumping the navel and pulling the diaphragm in and up can move a lot of energy. Sweat comes with it. Dripping sweat. Let’s cleanse!

We’re both losing weight. LOOKING GOOD!

I recommend you try something like this. So many meditations are, well, meditative. Try one of the “heavies”. Tantric Har, for example. Get that navel pumping and stimulate your system.
One class, the Siri Singh Sahib put the right hand palm down in front of the heart center. Elbow up, parallel to the floor. His comment was that the yogis use the Hamsa Danda (T-Stick) for this. Since we didn’t have one, we just put the arm into the correct position and held it. Whew!

PLEASE, give yourself time afterward to integrate. Sit and meditate in the silence for a few minutes. Lie down on your spine for 11-16 minutes. If time is an issue, set an alarm so you don’t wake 2 hours later. It happens.

Wishing you all a great Spring sadhana. You could set a goal of Summer Solstice and see where you are in 40 to 90 days. Waho!

Blessings.
